A Double sided 16th Birthday Cake.

As usual this is not my initial  design  it had much more... so much more on it but TIME...  Time... time (only 3 days start to finish).... always plays against me or rather maybe I happen to think I am a SUPER WOMAN and falls short of it:-( .  Now if you happened to notice any gaps in the cake design you know why!!. So this is what I ended up doing.

A cake I had promised a long while back to a dear little girl who is actually a lovely young lady now.  I found out she loves the colour blue, loves music, plays  Piano and Saxophone , watches horror movies and loves reading.  I couldn't do all of them so decided to pick on a couple to create this cake..... a double sided Piano/Saxophone Cake.  She LOVED it , hope you do too....

Used Satin Ice Fondant to create this cake.

A Quick Cake for my Loving Neighbour

My lovely 70+ year old neighbour had her birthday recently.  Such a sweet lady she is , I always remember her coming over when my son was born with a big box of all white knitted sweater, mittens, hats... the whole works all made by herself ( she started knitting when she heard I was going to have a baby but she didn't know whether it was a boy or a girl so she made it all white )  and my daughter got a cute teddy bear her size when she was born.

Every year I used to do something....this year I thought I will make a cake for her. Last minute decision as always  on the day of her birthday hee...hee..... So in between going to my son's presentation, school runs, violin class, station runs....... This is what I came up with.... a simple cake, with a rose I had made long time a go, finished at 9pm ( a bit late I know and didn't get good photos either) but she was over the moon :-). That's what matters I guess.

Happy Birthday to Meeeeeeee............................

I know I had already said I had done my last cake for the next 6 months in my last post and.....here I go breaking it......For the FIRST TIME I made a cake for my birthday ...Yeah yeah you heard right "FIRST time a cake for MOI, all lovingly made by MOI and little bit of self indulgence and what is wrong with that I say :-)

Self indulgence is okay but to stay up till 3:00am doing it while your hands are paining brings CRAZINESS to a new level.

Till two days before the D-day I hadn't even decided whether I will do anything, didn't feel like and was missing my parents a lot........ This decision sort of grew on me ....The kids wanted a cake, there was extra cake, fondant, buttercream etc... from last week, there were two roses I had made long time back ( A black/Burgandy rose and a two toned 'Osiria' rose)  and the centres for a Red Ranunculus which I made last year inspired by a photograph by Julie Scholz but never got around to finishing (How it ended up becoming a hybrid between a Red Ranunculus and Red Poppy  on the cake is a result of time and laziness)  and most of all I wanted to do something to keep myself occupied so that I don't think too much about my Parents and get myself down.

So the day before my birthday and on my birthday  I was still making the cake,  the flowers and doing the finishing touches. I wanted to try something colourful to keep my spirits up, I don't know whether it reflects ME but here you go MY BIRTHDAY CAKE. Hope you like it . Thank you so much for all your support.

Rose Vines: A 60th birthday Cake

My first cake since I have been diagnosed with mild Carpel Tunnel Syndrome on both hands a week and a half ago ( the nerves on the wrist get pressed which causes numbness and pain ). Not in the best of moods these days. Best part is not to do anything  ( a good excuse... ;-)) and the worst part is I have to learn the hard way what I can do and not do by doing it ;-). the laptop seem to be a definite no no especially the touch pad, piping on cakes (which I hardly do anyway)  also seems to be one but doing fondant cakes I would put it under maybe….with this cake middle of my palm and wrist are were aching after doing the tiny vines and roses on the 60 but the rest of work felt okay even though it did take a lot longer to do( having rest in between) . Even cooking is a yes and no.....like cutting something for a long period of time is a bit painful. I guess anything repetitive  and involves the wrist is not good!!!

Did any of you have this problem and how did you overcome it?....cos I am still passionate about doing cakes and also getting on the laptop. I am trying to avoid surgery as of now and trying to rest my hands as much as possible ( but sometimes the temptation gets the better of me like now :-).....and have four more cakes I have promised and need to do before end of this year hopefully it is not too much of a load!!)

I should be talking about the cake instead of talking about me so sorry about that… Chocolate cake with chocolate filling covered with orange flavoured buttercream and then fondant. Wanted to go subtle this time with the colours. Hope you like it . Got the idea of doing the vines when I went to the display garden at hunter valley and saw all the lovely roses there.

Thank you for looking and for all the lovely support, encouragements and comments that have come my way since I started this blog.

Vintage......

This was one of my quick creations for a dinner at a good friend of ours.  A design on the run, just had couple of hours to make this one ( Baked the cake in the morning, left it to cool, went shopping, started decorating at 3:30 pm  and finished at 6:30pm, took photos  and was ready by 7:15pm . That was not bad I thought but my hubby as usual thought otherwise ;-), We were 1hr & 15mins LATE!!!! according to him. Funny thing was when we reached our friend's place, most of them were arriving just then hee...heee, that made me feel so much better. Had a really lovely long  night, came back home at 2am and I had another set of cupcakes to do in the morning..............
